On the morning of graduation, Eli woke at six and read the notebook aloud.
"Item one," he said. "Wear the real shoes, not the boat shoes."
Laurence groaned into the pillow.
"Item two. Eat breakfast sitting down."
"I always eat sitting down," Laurence said.
"Item three. Sleep till eight."
"It's six."
"That's why you're lying down," Eli said, and turned the page. "Item four. Do not cry at the ceremony."
"I won't."
"Item five. If you do cry, do it facing the third row, where I can see you."
Laurence rolled over and looked at the roof of the boathouse.
He had a grin he could not hide.
"These are the best orders I've ever had," Laurence said.
"They're the only orders I've ever given."
"Item six?"
Eli looked at the last line on the page, and smiled.
"Stay."
"That's not an order," Laurence said. "That's what I'm already doing."
