He Made Me Sign, Not Knowing I Was Another's Wife novel · Chapter 11 of 24

Chapter 11: Asked

Ansel came home at a quarter to midnight.

I was sitting on the stairs in Ruth's old robe, with the phone in my lap and Vivienne's silence on the screen.

She had not answered.

He closed the front door softly and stood with his back against it, still in the dark suit.

"Clay didn't ask me another thing," he said. "He walked back inside and sat down and didn't speak for an hour."

"And Hugh?"

"Left before the cake."

"Your brother knows."

"He knows something. He doesn't know what it means yet." He rubbed his eyes. "He'll work it out by morning. He's not stupid, only used to being obeyed."

"I answered Vivienne."

"What did you say?"

"The truth. That I knew exactly who you were."

"Good."

"She hasn't written back."

"She will."

He took off his jacket and hung it on the post.

His shirt was open at the collar and the tie was gone altogether.

I looked at the base of his throat.

Last night I had leaned over him in the kitchen and sent him away.

It had been eleven weeks since Providence.

I stood up.

"Ansel."

"Yes."

"Rule three."

He went still.

"I'm asking," I said.

He didn't move.

"Not tonight, I seem to remember," he said, with great gravity. "Not tonight, husband."

"Don't you dare."

A corner of his mouth went up.

Then it went down again, and he looked at me with his whole face.

"Say it plainly, Leona. I won't guess."

"I want you to take me upstairs."

"Which room?"

"Yours."

"The sloped one."

"I don't care about the ceiling."

He crossed the hall in three steps.

He stopped an inch short of me, with his hands open at his sides.
