Chapter 4: Seven Days
The Ashworth Homes tower has a lobby with a two-story glass wall and a security desk shaped like a boat.
I walked in at eight-fifteen on Tuesday with the pizza flyer in my hand.
Nobody stopped me.
I had a visitor badge from three years of Sunday lunches, and the guard at the desk still remembered my coffee order.
Rodney's mother was at the elevators.
Mrs. Ashworth wore pearls and a camel coat, and she was holding a paper cup from the café downstairs.
She saw me and her face did not change.
"Emme," she said. "What a surprise."
"You signed their marriage license."
She sipped her coffee.
"Shall we discuss it upstairs?"
"No. We'll discuss it here."
A dozen employees were crossing the lobby with lanyards and laptop bags, and several of them slowed down.
Mrs. Ashworth lowered her voice.
"Rodney's father loved Tobin like a son. When Delphine's brother died, Rodney promised that girl she would never be alone. I was a witness to a promise."
"You were a witness to a marriage."
"A paper."
"You told me I was your daughter."
"You are." She held my eye. "Emme, you will be, after this is cleaned up. Delphine is unstable. You know that. Do you want her anniversary to end the way it could have ended?"
"What does that mean?"
She said nothing.
The elevator doors behind her opened, and Rodney stepped out.
He had a travel mug in one hand and a folder in the other.
