Chapter 17: Sorry Four

"Ten," Daniel said, and his knees went.

He did not hit the ground.

Two hands caught him under the arms, hard, from behind, and a body took his whole weight against its chest.

"You idiot," Johnny said into his hair. "You absolute idiot. Who told you to stand?"

"Nobody."

"Ten seconds. At night. On a fence post with a loose wire."

"I counted," Daniel said, and started to laugh, and then could not stop, and it turned into something wetter.

Johnny turned him round without a word.

He lifted him, one arm under his knees, and carried him into the barn.

It was dark and smelled of warm hay.

Johnny set him down on a bale and stood back with his arms folded.

A single bulb hung over the door.

It lit half of Johnny's face, and the half Daniel could see was furious.

"You want to say something," Johnny said. "Say it. I'm here."

"You tore up the note."

"It was a smear."

"It said I was sorry."

"It said you were sorry in blue ink, with the words washed off. That's the whole problem, Daniel." Johnny's voice shook. "You can't stop wiping things off."

Daniel looked at his own hands.

They were black to the wrist, with a split on the left palm that was still bleeding.

"I'm not wiping any more," he said.

"Good."

"I'd like you to say yours. First. Whatever you've got."

Johnny looked at him for a long moment.

Then he sat down on the bale opposite, with his elbows on his knees.
