Chapter 19: The Last Rub
Lydia's POV
I texted Preston at six that evening.
Come alone at nine. Suite 704. We should settle this without lawyers.
He answered in under a minute: I knew you'd come to your senses. I'll bring flowers.
Knox read it over my shoulder and said, "No."
"He won't say anything in front of you."
"He won't say anything in front of a recorder."
"He will if he thinks I'm alone and weak." I held up my phone. "That's the only thing he's ever believed about me."
Knox stood at the window of the suite for a long time.
"I'll be next door with the connecting door open an inch," he said. "If he touches you in a way you don't want, I come through."
"He's touched me every morning for six months," I said. "I know what he does."
Knox looked away, and his hands closed.
At five to nine, I moved my chair to the middle of the room and put a blanket over my knees.
I set my phone face down on the side table with the recording running.
Preston knocked twice.
He came in with white roses and a bottle of the sparkling cider I used to drink.
He stopped when he saw me.
I had not combed my hair. I wore a robe, and I had put dark under my eyes with a pencil.
"Oh, Lyd," he said softly. "Look at you."
He set the flowers on the table and knelt in front of my chair.
"I've been sick about it," he said. "About all of it. Skylar has gone to her uncle's, and my mother's in bed with her pressure. I just want us to be us again."
