Chapter 5: Magnesium

I called Dennis next, and he picked up on the first ring.

"I'm coming," he said, before I had finished a sentence. "Don't move. Don't drive."

He lived fifteen minutes away, and he made it in six.

He carried a sleeping Birdie out to his truck in her pajamas and buckled her into the back.

Then he came back for me.

"Put your arm around my neck," he said.

"I can walk."

"I know. Put your arm around my neck."

The nurse at the women's hospital took my pressure and did not say anything.

She took it again and then walked quickly to the desk.

Ten minutes later, there were four people around my bed.

"Stephanie, you have preeclampsia," the doctor said. She was young and calm, and she held my chart against her chest. "Your pressure is one-seventy over a hundred and ten. That's dangerous for you and for the baby."

"Is she okay?"

"Her heart rate is strong. We're going to start magnesium to protect you from seizures. You'll feel hot and heavy, and it will pass."

"How long do I stay?"

"Until your pressure is under control. Possibly until delivery."

"I'm thirty-two weeks."

"I know," the doctor said, and she pressed my hand. "Is your husband on his way?"
