Chapter 22: The Officer
"Swab that gun," I said loudly. "For his prints. There won't be any."
The officer in the mirrored glasses didn't even turn his head.
The kid had his phone up, filming everything, the way Conall's men had taught him.
They put Conall in the back of the cruiser with a hand on his head.
He looked at me through the glass.
He mouthed a single word.
Friday.
Then they drove him away.
Conall's criminal lawyer met me at the district station an hour later.
"The prosecutor wants him held for a dangerousness hearing," he said. "Prior record, firearm, high-profile. The earliest date the court can give us is Monday."
"The vote is tomorrow at four."
"I know when the vote is, Dr. Sheehan. Everyone in this building knows when the vote is."
"So somebody timed this."
He looked at me over his glasses.
"Somebody always times these," he said. "I just can't prove it by Monday."
The front desk of the station was crowded.
The desk sergeant looked at me like he knew my face from the paper.
