Chapter 15: Name Your Price

June's POV

I closed the dorm door behind me and locked it.

Zara watched me do it.

"You wrote them," she said. "Didn't you?"

"Yes."

"All four paragraphs."

"And a lot more than four."

She smoothed the cream paper against her knee.

Her nails were done in a pale pink that matched nothing in the room.

"I wondered," she said. "At the boat. When you mouthed his toast, I thought, she's doing it on purpose."

"I was."

"I thought, no, she's just that good at guessing what he'll say."

Her voice was small and puzzled.

"It's the same voice. The letter. The toast. The things he said to me in the Hamptons."

"Those weren't his."

"He told me they were."

I didn't answer. I put my coat on the chair.

The zipper of the green dress pulled across my back, and I thought of a hand on that same strap, and I put the thought away.

"Zara," I said. "At the mixer. When did you know?"

She looked at me for a long time.

Then, slowly, she folded the paper and put it on my pillow.

"The first night," she said.

It was so plain that I almost missed it.

"His friend came over with the wrong handle. He said, 'That's Zara's roommate, you idiot.' Brett went white." She tilted her head. "I was standing right there in the pale blue."

"And you said nothing."

"I said, 'I think there's been a mix-up.' And then Brett looked at me like I was a prize, and I thought, why would I fix it?"

I had expected a lie.

I had not expected her to say it so easily.

"You let him believe it for a week," I said.

"I let him believe it was a happy accident." Her smile came back, small and sharp. "He wasn't going to miss you, Junie. He was in love with a voice. Voices are interchangeable."
