Chapter 21: Whose Words
June's POV
"I didn't write any of it," Brett said again.
His voice came through the speakers into every corner of the ballroom.
"I took the words from a girl I talked to for six months. I said they were mine. I gave them to someone else and said they were mine."
Zara stood up.
Her chair went over behind her.
"He's confused," she said to the room, bright and clear. "He's been under so much pressure. Brett, sit down."
"Her name is June," Brett said.
He pointed.
Three hundred people turned and looked at me.
I stood up.
My legs held. I was grateful to them.
"Brett wrote none of it," I said. I didn't need a microphone. The room was that quiet. "The toast was mine, and the playlist, and the itinerary for the boat party, and the dinner in SoHo. He signed his name to all of it."
"Why would anyone believe you?" Zara said. "A girl with a hoodie and a vendetta?"
"I don't need you to believe me."
"Good."
"I need you to believe Zara's own words."
Roxie was already on her feet beside me.
She held up her phone in one hand.
"This is a group chat from the night of the alumni mixer," Roxie said, loud and clear. "It's from Zara Danner to her sorority house."
"Don't," Zara said.
"Do you want me to read it, or would you like to?"
The room went completely still.
"Fine," Roxie said. "I'll read the last line."
She did.
"'I'm efficient. She's a hoodie. She'll never know.'"
A woman at the second table put her hand over her mouth.
Somewhere near the back a man said, "Jesus."
Zara's face did something I had never seen it do.
All the sweetness drained away at once, and what was left was ordinary, scared and furious.
"That's a private chat," she said. "That's stolen."
