Chapter 24: Husband
Quincy woke before I could move.
"Don't," he said into my hair.
"That's his key."
"I know. Stay there."
He got out of bed, pulled on gray sweatpants, and went down the hall.
I sat up with the sheet around me and listened.
The front door opened.
Nobody came in whistling this time.
"Quincy," Brett said. His voice was quiet and rough. "I wanted to do this in the daytime, with you awake."
"It's seven."
"Then I'm early."
I pulled on Quincy's gray sweater from the floor and went to the bedroom door.
Brett stood in the hall in a plain jacket, not the team one.
He looked tired, and somehow older.
He saw me and stopped.
"Hi, June."
"Hi, Brett."
"I'll be fast." He held up the key between two fingers. "I got this when I was twelve. Dad handed it to me and said it was a gift. I didn't know until last week it was a way of keeping tabs."
"It wasn't," Quincy said.
"It was a little bit."
Quincy didn't argue.
Brett took a folded sheet of paper from his jacket and held it out to me.
"I wrote you something," he said. "It took me four days. It's not good."
I took it.
