Chapter 11: Charleston
Gianna's POV
Two weeks later we drove back into Charleston on a wet gray morning, with the harbor on our left and my ring on my finger.
Dario had paid the quarter on Monday, in full, with a smile.
He had gone to the bank in his best coat and signed the transfer with a hand that did not shake.
Then he had come home and put his fist through a cabinet door.
My mother fixed it with a drill and said nothing.
"Do you want to go straight to the hotel?" he asked now, from the driver's seat.
"I want to go to my father's house," I said.
He glanced at me.
"It is a bad idea."
"It is the only house I have ever had a key to. I would like to walk into it as myself."
He drove me there.
The Landolfi house stood on a bluff above the harbor, white and square, with a gate my father had put in the year my mother left.
The housekeeper let us in. She looked at my ring and at my face, and she did not say a word, but she squeezed my arm as I passed.
My father was waiting in the dining room.
He was at the head of the long table, in his good jacket, with a bottle open and four places set.
"Gianna," he said, and rose.
He did not come around the table to hug me. He gestured at the chair.
"Mr. Ricci. You do my family a great honor."
"I do not think I do," Dario said, and sat.
Lidia came in through the side door in a pale blue dress, carrying a dish.
She looked fragile and happy. She kissed my cheek.
"I was so afraid you would not come," she said, her eyes bright. "I thought about you every single day. I am so sorry about the voice note. It was a joke that went too far."
