Chapter 8: Same Silence

I woke in his bed with the sun already on the wall and the smell of coffee in the next room.

For a moment I did not move.

Nobody had laughed at me in my sleep. I had slept eight hours straight for the first time in five years.

I found his shirt on the floor and put it on.

Dario was standing at the kitchen counter with his back to me, pouring two cups.

"I do not know how you take it," he said without turning.

"Black."

"Then we have that in common."

He handed me the cup, and for a second his eyes went down my bare legs and back up.

"Good morning, Miss Landolfi," he said.

"Good morning, landlord."

His mouth twitched.

I drank half the coffee before I said the thing I had decided to say.

"You asked me to stay quiet at that table."

His face went still.

"I told you in the car that I was wrong," he said.

"You told me in the car, with the door shut. Everyone in that room watched you talk for ten minutes while I sat there."

"I know."

"I have been told to keep quiet by people who loved me, and by people who did not." I set the cup down. "From you it felt the same."

I watched him take it.

He did not defend himself. He did not explain how tired he had been or how well he had meant it.

He took out his phone and put it on the counter on speaker.

It rang twice, and the old man's voice answered, gravelly and awake.

"Ricci."

"I have a standing request," Dario said. "At any table where my fiancée sits, she is spoken to first and she answers first. Anyone who talks over her can take it up with me."

"Is that all?" the old man said.

"Tell the others."

"I will tell them at lunch." There was a pause. "She has a good voice, Ricci. Don't make a fool of yourself over it."
