Chapter 11: Noah's Terms

He found the pool house by following the lights.

It stood at the bottom of the garden, a glass box with a heated pool and a long row of lounge chairs.

Noah sat on the edge with his shoes off and his feet in the water.

He had been there ten minutes when the door slid open behind him.

He did not turn around.

"Go away, Troy," Noah said.

"It's not only Troy."

All three of them stood in the doorway.

Troy was in front, still red-eyed.

William and Henry stood behind him, in shirtsleeves, with the dark garden at their backs.

"We deserve it," William said. "Whatever you want to say, we deserve it."

"Sit down."

They sat on the lounge chairs in a row.

Noah stood up and dried his feet on a towel.

His voice was calm when he spoke.

"I read the whole thread," he said. "I read what Maya didn't read aloud."

"Noah..."

"I'm talking, Henry."

Henry closed his mouth.

"You wrote that rule the night before I moved in. Nobody touches him until he chooses. And then you each broke it within a week."

"Yes."

"Because you couldn't help it."

"Yes," said Troy, in a cracked voice.

"Good," Noah said.

They stared at him.

"Because so did I."

Troy made a sound that was half a laugh.

"I'm not angry about the thread," Noah said. "I'm angry about the other thing. The three of you deciding what I should be handed and when. Writing rules about me in a chat I wasn't in. Waiting for me to choose, as if I couldn't do it without a schedule."

"We thought it was fair," Henry said.

"It was kind. It still wasn't mine."

He walked along the edge of the pool.

"So here are the rules. They're mine this time."

Nobody breathed.

"One. When I want to lead, I lead. I don't ask. You don't ask me to explain."
