Chapter 6: Ten Minutes

Sydney Lundy walked straight up to the counter and did not stop until she was an arm's length from me.

Up close she looked younger than the poster.

She had dark circles under her eyes, and her coat was buttoned wrong.

"Mrs. Harmon," she said. "Please. Ten minutes."

"No."

"You don't know what you saw."

"I saw my husband leaning toward you on a couch," I said. "I saw your pen in your hand."

"That is not what it was."

"I saw it, Sydney."

The diner had gone quiet again.

Half the room had watched the morning show, and now they turned to watch us.

"If you've come to tell me he's lonely," I said, "I know. If you've come to tell me he didn't mean it, I know that too."

"I haven't come to say either."

"Then what do you want?"

Sydney looked at the yellow pad in her arms.

Her fingers were tight on it.

"There's something you have to hear," she said. "Not from him. From me. I have proof, and it's on this pad."

I did not want proof.

I wanted my omelet, and my tea, and a hundred miles between me and every person who had ever read Stuart's book.

"Get out," I said.

"Elise, please."

"You don't get to call me that. You had my husband's attention for months. You're in the film of the story I lived. I'm not giving you ten minutes of my life."

Sydney's eyes filled.

"Please," she said again.

Dot stepped out from behind the counter with her arms crossed.

"You heard her, sweetheart. Out."

Sydney looked from Dot to me and back.

Then she took a business card from her coat pocket, wrote a number on the back, and set it carefully on the counter.
