Chapter 17: Lights On
I turned on every light in his bedroom.
Both nightstand lamps, the overhead, and the green-shaded reading light on the wall over the iron bed.
Soren stood in the doorway in his shirtsleeves and watched me do it.
"Line one," I said.
"Lights on," Soren said.
"All night. I want to see all of you." I looked at him. "I've had you on a porch, on a gantry, in a truck, in the dark of a stairwell. I want to look."
"Then look," he said.
I shut the door behind him.
I had come straight from the courthouse in my gray dress with the tape from the galley in my bag, and I had not said a word about it.
I would, in the morning.
Tonight I wanted one thing in the world, and it was in front of me with its collar open.
"Take it off," I said. "All of it. Slowly."
He unbuttoned the shirt.
He folded it over the chair, which almost made me laugh.
He took off his boots and his belt and his trousers, and last his shorts, and stood in the white light with the scar on his ribs and the old scar on his hand.
Gray hair on a broad chest.
The long muscles of his thighs.
He was already hard.
I walked around him once, slowly.
"You're looking at me like a witness," he said.
"I'm taking you down."
His laugh was short and rough.
I put my palm flat against his back, between the shoulder blades, and slid it down to the dip of his spine.
He went rigid.
"Get on the bed," I said. "Against the headboard. Sit up."
