Chapter 24: The Socks
Hank got to the hospital ten minutes after Wren called him, with sawdust in his hair.
He came through the doors of the birthing floor at a run and stopped dead at the desk.
"I'm here for Libby Sutter," he said. "I'm not family. I'm..."
"He's with me," Wren said, behind him, in scrubs and a face mask pulled down. "Get him a gown."
"Wren, I'm not..."
"Hank. Gown."
He put on a gown.
By midnight I had been walking the hallway for eight hours, with a hand on the rail and a nurse I did not know telling me I was doing wonderfully.
I did not feel wonderful.
I felt tired, and sore, and very far from home.
"Libby." Hank stood at the end of the corridor with his hands out. "Tell me what to do."
"Talk."
"About what?"
"Anything. The boat. The sign."
"The sign says Boatyrd."
"Hank."
"I fixed it. This morning. I painted the A in, and it's too big, and it looks like a mistake." He took my elbow. "It looks like a lot of A's, to be honest. It's a lot of A."
I laughed, and then a wave took me, and I stopped laughing, and gripped his arm hard enough to leave marks.
"Talk," I said through my teeth.
"I'm going to teach her to sail," he said, steadily. "In the summer, when she's big enough to hold a line. She'll hate it, and then she'll love it. She'll tell you she's a pirate."
"She?"
"I think it's a she."
"You can't know that."
"I can't," he said. "But I've decided."
