Chapter 14: Pity for Sale
Lacey's POV
Kelsey came alone, an hour after the sun should have set.
She walked the whole plank slowly with her hands out, and she stopped where the gold light of the wall began.
The red coat hung off one shoulder.
Her lips were blue and her nails, the long pink ones, were cracked.
She was sobbing before she opened her mouth.
"Lace," she said. "Please. Please don't let them watch me like this."
Dee had made my feed public again, and the sky above us filled with words.
I stayed on my patch with my arms crossed.
"Nobody's making you stand there."
"He took everything." Kelsey held out her wrists. "I'm bonded to him, Lacey. He controls my food, my logs, my blankets. He said if I left his patch he'd cut mine loose."
A player: [oh no]
A player: [is she telling the truth??]
A player: [she's bonded to him, she can't do anything]
That part was true, and it was the worst part.
I looked at the bond sigil on her wrist, a thin silver ring, and I felt the old pull to open the door and put a blanket over her.
I had done it all my life.
When I was twelve and she was ten, she cried until I gave her my seat in the front of the car.
When I was twenty-two, she cried until I lent her the coat.
"I was so scared," Kelsey said. "I did what he said. I always do what he says. You know how he is, Lace. You know."
"I know exactly how he is."
"Then help me."
"What do you need?"
Her face lit with hope, and I watched it.
