Chapter 22: What Gisela Lost
Isla's POV
"One more thing," I said, "and then I'll be quiet."
The old founder lifted his cane. The hill went silent.
I stood in front of Gisela with Conal at my shoulder and the sea behind us.
"I want the registry book out of her arms," I said. "The Alpha pair sits above the registry. That's what the page says. I want it held by the council, in the open, where the pups' names can't be struck by one person's pen."
"Seconded," said the old founder. "Hands."
Hands went up across the grass. Not all of them at once, and not all of them quickly.
The ferry crew raised theirs first, then the old founder's own house.
A woman in a green coat looked at Gisela and put her hand up anyway.
By the end, nobody on the hill had a hand down.
Gisela looked at them one at a time.
"You owe this house everything," she said.
"We owe it an apology," said the woman in the green coat. "For three years of not asking."
The old founder stepped forward and lifted the registry book out of Gisela's arms.
She let him.
Her hands stayed curled in the air a moment where the book had been.
"The keeper's seat is vacant," he said. "It will be held in council until the pack chooses."
"Mother," Torben said.
He came to stand in front of her, and for the first time in his life he did not look away.
"I'm giving up the beta's seat too," he said. "I don't want it. I never did, and I should have said so when I was twenty."
