Chapter 17: Sam's Monday

Sam's POV

By Monday morning the video had been seen by every person in my building.

Somebody's niece had filmed Jenna at the microphone, and it had gone from the club's group chat to a cousin of my receptionist to the whole sales floor before I got my coat off.

I walked through the glass doors at eight, and the floor went silent.

Forty desks.

Forty people pretending to look at screens.

Travis Odell sat at his, in a pressed blue shirt, typing.

He had shaved.

He had come to work as if it were any other Monday.

I stood at the head of the floor and said, "Everyone, a minute."

The typing stopped.

"For the last month," I said, "there was a pool on this floor about a woman who ran a flower shop.

"I knew about it. I let it run, because I told myself it was none of my business.

"It was the business of a woman who stood in our break room and read her boyfriend's wedding card out loud. I'm sorry. I should have stopped it. The pool is over."

Nobody moved.

Somewhere at the back, a woman put her hand over her mouth.

"Travis," I said. "Come here."

He rose slowly, and made the long walk between the desks with his chin up.

I'll give him that.

He had a salesman's chin.

"Sam," he said, very low. "Can we do this in your office?"

"Your expense reports," I said, loud enough for the back row, "show fourteen thousand two hundred and twelve dollars of Redfield Freight money spent on dinners, hotels and flights with no client attached.

"Six of those nights are on a woman who is not your wife, or is, depending on the county."
