Chapter 9: Still Married
Travis came into the shop at six that evening, gray and unshaven, with a manila envelope.
I was alone behind the counter.
Roz was in the back room with the door open an inch, holding the pruning knife and pretending to repot a fern.
The certificate lay under my register, face up.
"Jen," he said. "Thank God. Can we talk?"
"Go ahead."
"Not here."
"It's a shop. It has a front window. You can talk here."
He looked at the window.
Two women outside were reading the chalkboard menu of bouquets, and a man was walking a dog.
He lowered his voice.
"I need you to sign something."
He slid the envelope across the counter.
Inside was a printed form headed Joint Petition for Dissolution of Marriage.
Yellow tabs marked the places where I was supposed to sign.
"What's this, Travis?"
"It's a quiet divorce. No lawyers, no court date. A judge just signs it." He wet his lips.
"Brooke's dad did the registry thing, and I called Clark County to be safe. And it turns out." He stopped.
"Turns out what?"
"Vegas was real."
I waited.
"The chapel filed it," he said. "I thought I tore up the license, Jen. I swear I thought I did.
"And it turns out it counted."
I kept my face still.
It was not hard.
I was done being surprised by him.
"So we're still married," I said.
"Technically."
"Technically."
"It's a paperwork error." He leaned over the counter. "Nobody knows.
"If you sign it tonight, it goes through in six weeks, and it never touches anyone. Brooke doesn't need to find out. Her dad doesn't need to find out.
