Chapter 15: Locked Out
Ty's POV
I beat the ambulance to Lakeshore General by four minutes, and I spent them running down the third-floor hall asking everyone in scrubs where my wife was.
They had her in a delivery room by the time I found it.
Lena was on the bed with her knees up and a monitor strapped across her belly, and her hair was stuck to her face.
"Thirty-four weeks," a doctor was saying. "The baby's lungs are close. We'll watch, but this is happening tonight."
Lena saw me in the doorway.
"Ty."
"I'm here."
"Is Eli okay?"
"He's with Shelby and the social worker. Shelby said to tell you he's fine." I swallowed. "She was the one who called, Lena."
"I know. I heard her."
A contraction took her, and she gripped the rail and breathed through her teeth.
I crossed the room and put my hand out, and she looked at it.
I had spent ten years not knowing whether she wanted me beside her at the worst moments, and I had thought she'd rather go alone.
She took my hand and crushed it.
"Don't leave," she said.
"I won't."
"Not for a game, not for a phone call. I mean it."
"I'm not going anywhere."
The nurse came with a clipboard and asked who would be paying, and I said, "Me," before I thought.
"No," Lena said, through the next breath.
"Lena, it's the least I..."
"My insurance is mine. I pay for my own daughter." She held my eyes. "You stay in the room. That's all you do."
I closed my mouth.
I understood then that she had never wanted my money, and that my mother had spent ten years telling me she did.
