Chapter 10: Jodie's Wedding

I held the bell of the stethoscope in my fist.

"Then we find it a room," I said.

"We?"

"You gave me a stethoscope with its name on it. You're in this now."

He laughed, and his shoulders finally came down.

"Okay, Doc. We."

June thirteenth was the day I was supposed to marry Judson Cantrell.

I stood on the boathouse lawn in a sage green dress and held Jodie's bouquet.

The river was flat and gold.

Jodie came down the aisle on her dad's arm in a white jumpsuit and her Phillies cap.

She'd lost a bet with her fiancée and honored it.

Her fiancée cried before Jodie even reached her.

Then Jodie cried.

Then the officiant cried, which I'm told is not normal.

I didn't cry.

I was too busy holding the bouquet and two rings and a packet of tissues and Jodie's cap when she threw it at me mid-vow.

They said their own words.

Jodie's were mostly about a parking ticket.

Her fiancée's were about the night they met at a softball game, when Jodie took a line drive to the face and finished the inning.

When they kissed, the whole lawn stood up.

Afterward, at the reception, the manager found me by the bar.

"Same date," she said quietly. "Better couple."

"Much better couple."

"The crab cakes are new, too."

"Thank God."

At dinner I gave my toast.

"I've known Jodie for four years," I said. "In that time she has hit one man with a softball, threatened three, and named her bat Gladys. She has never once been wrong about who deserved it."

The room laughed.

"This spring, I had a bad night. Jodie showed up with Gladys and didn't ask what happened. She just sat on my couch until it was over."
