Chapter 19: The Last Men

Giacomo lay on the long kitchen table with his shirt cut open and a dish towel pressed to his shoulder.

He was gray, but his eyes were open, and he was lecturing the doctor.

"I do not need a hospital. I need a cigar."

"You need a surgeon," I said, and shoved the doctor aside.

I had driven the whole way from Newark with my hands locked on the wheel.

I washed to the elbows at the sink and tore open the first-aid kit the way I would have in the ER.

The bullet had gone through the meat of his shoulder above the collarbone and out the back.

It had missed the artery by an inch.

"Hold this," I told the housekeeper, and packed the wound until the towel stopped turning red.

"You are very bossy," Giacomo said weakly.

"I get that from you."

He laughed, and then he winced.

"They burned a truck across the road," Dario said from the doorway. "The ambulance can't reach us yet."

He had already changed into a black vest and was checking a rifle.

I'd never seen him with one.

"Lily and the boy go in the cellar with the doctor," he said. "Two men on the stairs. Nobody comes out until I say."

"I want to say goodbye."

"There's no time."

"Then there's time for ten seconds," I said, and ran.

Lily was sitting on the cellar steps with the rabbit and the boy's hand in hers, bossing him through a game of Go Fish.
