Chapter 17: The Ledger
I had my dress straight and my hair pinned by the time Torin opened the door.
Jasper stood in the corridor with a battered leather case under his arm.
He had not slept either.
He looked at Torin's sling, at me, and at the lamp behind us, and he looked away fast.
"I drove to Cedar Hollow and back," he said. "Eleven hours. I went into the Beta's office with my own key, and nobody stopped me. I'm still the Alpha on paper."
"Show me," I said.
He put the case on the reading table and took out a ledger bound in green cloth.
The pages were ruled in columns, in the Beta's square hand.
Dates ran down the left side.
A sum ran down the right.
"Every month for two years," Jasper said. "From a steward at Greywater. He signed with a plain letter L, and the money came in cash."
I turned a page.
Beside each sum was a line in the Beta's writing.
Luna not shifting. Luna quiet. Luna asks after her mother's grave.
My skin went cold.
I turned to the last page.
Day Six: Captain at gate. Refused entry. Told the Alpha nothing, as instructed. Day Seven: sentry to the coast. Clinic file taken. Luna without witnesses.
"The sentry," I said.
"I asked the sentry's sister," Jasper said. "He was paid to go. He didn't know why."
I closed the book.
Torin had read over my shoulder, and I felt him go rigid.
"That hand is the Regent's steward," he said. "I've seen it on the Guard's pay chits for ten years."
