Chapter 10: It Was Always Hers

I had not done anything.

I was only standing there, with the thermos in front of me and my heart going hard.

But Ember woke up all the way, and the whole hall felt it.

It started as a hum in my ribs.

Then it climbed through my arms and out through my skin, a low warm pulse that rolled across the floor in a ring.

The antlers on the walls rattled.

The candles on every table leaned toward me, all at once.

Three hundred wolves sucked in their breath.

I knew that pull.

It was the thing I had felt in the bond with Cedric when we were first mated.

A tug in the chest, running between two people.

Except now there were three hundred of them.

They ran from every wolf in the room, and every one of them ended at me.

"Morven," Ember said, very quiet. "Don't fight it. It's only what's been waiting."

My eyes burned.

At the head table, the old elder had pushed back his chair.

He was staring at me with his hand over his mouth.

"Her eyes," he whispered.

I looked at the dark window in front of me, and in the glass my eyes were gold again, shining.

I felt the power rise in me and lift at the roots of my hair.

And on the dais, Cedric staggered.

His knee went out from under him.

He grabbed the arm of Rhoda's chair and missed it.

He went down on one knee on the polished boards of his own hall, in front of every wolf he commanded, with his hand flat on the floor.

The sound he made was small and shocked.

"Mother," he said. "I can't feel them."

"Get up," Rhoda said.

"I can't feel any of them."
