Chapter 13: Through the Glass

I did not open the window all the way.

I raised the sash two inches and stood back from the gap with my arms folded.

Cold air and snow came in, and Cedric's breath with it.

"Thank you," he said.

"Don't thank me. You have until I get bored."

He nodded.

His hands were bare and red, and his teeth knocked together when he tried to talk.

"I walked across the bridge," he said. "Your wolves at the yellow line let me through. I didn't think they would."

"They're not my wolves."

"They looked at me like they were."

"Say what you came to say."

He looked at the snow between his knees.

"For three years I thought I was the best Alpha this state ever had," he said. "I never lost a fight. I never slept badly. I thought it was me."

"It was me."

"I know that now."

"You knew it the night you opened your mouth in front of the elders, and you didn't even have the strength to know it."

His shoulders jerked.

"My mother told me you were holding me back," he said. "She said a wolfless Luna would drag the pack down, and Priscilla could be what you couldn't."

"And you believed her."

"I wanted to."

That was the first honest thing he had said to me in a year.

"Why?"

"Because Priscilla made me feel strong," he said. "You never did. You just made me feel known."

I let that sit in the gap between us.

Behind me, my son made a small noise in his sleep.

"I'm not here to ask you back," Cedric said. "I know you'd never. I only want to see them."

"You want to see the heirs."

"I want to see my kids."

His voice broke on the last word, and I hated that it moved me at all.

"Here is what you get," I said. "Once a week, you may come to this infirmary. You may look at them, and you may hold them if I say you can. I will be in the room every second."
