Chapter 17: Silver on the Bridge
I slept eleven hours and woke with the twins' warm weight on my chest.
The housekeeper had fed them while I was out.
She also told me, with her mouth tight, that forty Ironwood wolves had been standing unarmed on our bank of the river since noon.
Nobody had fired a shot.
Nobody had gone feral either.
The hills across the river were quiet for the first night in a week.
I found Torin at dusk on the bridge.
He was leaning on the rail at the Ironwood end, a long way from the yellow line, with his scarred hand hanging over the water.
I put the babies in the housekeeper's arms, and I walked out alone.
"You should be in bed," he said.
"You should be a lot of things."
"True."
I stood beside him.
The river was black and loud below us.
"You said you buried your brother," I said.
He did not turn his head.
"I did."
"I never asked you anything about him. I've been on your land for two months."
"You had your own."
"Tell me anyway."
He was quiet for a while.
"He was twenty-four," he said. "I was twenty-six. He was the better one of us. He laughed at everything."
"What happened?"
"There was a fight over the river fishing. It was nothing. A few men shouting on this bridge at night." He pointed at the planks, ten feet from where I stood. "He walked out to calm it down. He had his hands open."
I waited.
"A Black Fir guard shot him in the chest. Silver. From behind the line."
"On whose order?"
