Chapter 10: The Reading

Victoria's POV

Gran's lawyer worked out of a yellow Victorian on the old main street, in a room full of green leather chairs.

He was a thin man in his seventies, with a hearing aid and a very slow way of turning pages.

Beck took the chair nearest the desk.

Phyllis sat beside him with her purse on her knees, and she did not look at me.

I took the chair by the window and held the blue folder in my lap with both hands.

Jude was parked across the street.

I could see his truck through the glass, and I had told him not to come in.

"We are here for the will of my client," the lawyer said, "who instructed me to read it exactly as written, to everyone present, without interruption."

He cleared his throat and began.

The first pages were small things.

A hundred dollars to each woman in the bridge club, so they could have a drink on her.

The church organ fund.

Her husband's watch, to the foreman who had worked her orchard for thirty years.

Beck glanced at his phone twice.

"On to the house," Beck said. "The house burned, and we all know that."

"The house burned," the lawyer agreed mildly. "The land did not."

He turned a page.

"To my granddaughter, Victoria Riordan, I leave the land, the gatehouse, and all that remains on them."

"Good," I said.

"And," the lawyer said, "my entire interest in the Riordan Trust."

Beck stopped looking at his phone.

"The what?" he said.

"The Riordan Trust holds sixty percent of the shares of Hollenbeck Air Rescue."

I heard it, and I did not understand it.

The words went into my head and sat there.

"Sixty," I said.

"Sixty percent. Eight years ago my client sold the Riordan walnut orchard and invested the proceeds, in full, in a young aviation company. The investment was held in trust to protect it."
