Chapter 14: The Last Stool

Lydia's POV

The bar across from the Wharf stairs had a new name and the same sticky floor.

Cosimo held the door for me on Wednesday night and didn't say why we were there.

He didn't have to.

It was the bar where he had spent the night I waited on the stairs.

"I wanted you to see it," he said. "I couldn't tell you in the car."

"See what?"

"The stool."

He pointed with his chin at the last one on the left, under a broken light.

I sat on it.

He took the one next to it and ordered two whiskeys without looking at the bartender.

"Five years ago I sat right here," he said. "I read your note until the paper split along the fold."

"Cosimo."

"I'm not saying it to hurt you. You said no questions, and then you broke your own rule, and now I'm breaking mine."

"Say it."

He turned the glass a quarter turn on the bar.

"It wasn't that you left," he said. "I could have survived that. It was one line in the note. You said you were choosing a life without men like me."

"I never wrote it."

"I know. I know that now." His jaw worked. "But I believed it for five years, Lydia. Because it sounded like you."

I felt that land low in my chest.

"Why would it sound like me?"

"Because the first night I took you to dinner at my uncle's table, your father's driver waited outside in the car the whole time. And you didn't say a word about it."
