Chapter 4: The Copy of Record
My father had ordered for me before I sat down.
Oysters, the sole, a glass of white wine I would not touch.
The Harbor Club dining room was half empty on Saturdays, and he'd taken the corner table by the window, where nobody could hear us and everyone could see us.
Franklin McAlister stood when I came in and kissed my cheek.
He smelled like the same cedar soap he had used my whole life.
"You look tired, sweetheart."
"I found out yesterday that my husband has a pregnant girlfriend."
"I know." He sat, and he folded his napkin across his knee. "Benton came to me in tears."
"Before or after he sent his assistant to my bed?"
"Lydia."
"I'm only asking for the order of events."
My father took off his reading glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
He looked old, and kind, and sorry, and I wanted so badly to put my head on his shoulder that my own hands shook.
"He made a mistake," he said. "A serious one. I told him so this morning, and I told him the girl will be moved. There's a position in Seattle."
"The girl is carrying his child."
"There are ways to handle that."
"Handle."
"Financially. Discreetly." He reached across the table and covered my hand with his. "I know it feels like the end of the world. It isn't. Marriages survive worse. Your grandmother's did."
"Grandmother's husband didn't take her money."
My father's thumb stopped moving on my knuckles.
"What money?"
"The trust Mother left me. It's empty, Dad. Eleven million dollars and he emptied it into a company called Harbor Line Partners, and he signed my name on fourteen transfers."
I watched his face the entire time.
I have thought about that moment many times since.
