Chapter 7: The Lock on the Inside

Benton went down the long aisle at a near run, past three hundred turned heads, and took Brianna by the elbow.

"You're upset," he said. "You're tired. We're leaving."

"You told me she signed everything."

"Not here, Bri."

"You said she knew about the baby."

"We will talk in the car."

He steered her through the doors with a smile for anyone watching, and three hundred people watched him do it.

Brianna looked back at me once over her shoulder.

She did not look proud anymore.

I stood at the foot of the stage with my passport in my hand and my pulse in my ears.

Then the room started talking, all at once, and I walked up the aisle through it.

Cosimo was still at the back wall.

He fell into step beside me without a word, and we went out through the lobby into the cold.

We were almost at the revolving doors when someone caught my wrist from behind.

Benton had left Brianna with the doorman.

He pulled me around hard, and his face was white with a rage I had never seen in five years of marriage.

"What did you think that would do?" he said, close to my ear. "You think they'll applaud you? They'll remember a hysterical woman who ruined a charity night."

"Let go."

"You are going to go home, and you are going to apologize to your father."

I jerked my arm back.

My hand struck the tray of a passing waiter, and six champagne flutes went down on the marble.

The sound filled the lobby.

I looked down.

A long line of red ran across my palm, from the base of my thumb to my wrist.

Benton stared at it and let go.

"Lyd," he said, in a different voice. "Lyd, I didn't mean to."
