Chapter 22: Coffee

"What's he doing there?" I said.

"Something I'll be blamed for." Santiago stood up. "The containers go to the Port of Chicago."

"If customs opens one and finds anything but coffee, my name is on the paperwork."

"And the uncles get the coffee back."

"And I go to prison in your country." He picked up his cane from where it leaned on his chair. "Stay here."

"No."

He looked at me.

"I've seen your face when you say stay here," I said. "I'm coming."

The warehouse was down on the flat by the river, a long tin roof under floodlights.

Two trucks were backed up to the loading dock.

A row of steel containers stood open behind them, painted with the new name of his family's company.

Men were carrying sacks of coffee up the ramps. Burlap, stamped, the same as the sack he'd brought to Peg's.

The cousin was standing by the office door with a cigarette, in shirtsleeves, smiling.

He saw Santiago's car. Then he saw me get out of it.

His smile got wider.

"Primo," he called. "And the little nurse. I'm helping. Somebody has to load your coffee."

"Who said you could be here?"

"The uncles." The cousin spread his hands. "It's a family business, no?"

There were eight of the uncles' men on the dock, and three of Santiago's.

Nobody moved.

I knew what it looked like when a room was about to go wrong.
