Chapter 12: Reinstated
The College of Nursing had moved to a glass building on the east side of the river, and I had to ask a security guard where the dean's office was.
I wore the gray suit and carried my silver student pin in my pocket.
The new dean was a tall woman in her sixties with a clipboard and short white hair.
She stood up from behind her desk and held out both hands.
"Ms. Tolbert," she said. "We've been expecting someone for three years. I'd hoped it would be you."
"I'm not sure what I'm asking for."
"You're asking to come back," she said. "Sit down."
I sat.
She had my file on the desk, and it was thinner than I expected.
"Dr. Hendry called me Sunday night," she said. "Anne's fund was set up with a clause. The seat is held for you indefinitely, and the tuition is covered, if you complete the program within six years of your return."
"I'm forty-six."
"I'm aware."
"The other students will be twenty-two."
"Some will be thirty-five, some will be fifty," she said. "We have a man in his sixties in our second year. He drove a bus."
I laughed, and it surprised me.
"You were the strongest clinical student in a decade," the dean said. "Anne said so every year at the faculty dinner. I don't think I've seen the file of anyone with your marks since."
"That was twenty-two years ago."
"Then you've forgotten some of it. You will remember more than you think."
She turned the file around and slid a pen across to me.
