Chapter 17: Hospital Policy

"Then don't be lying by nine," I said.

Lowell stood very still in my mother's kitchen.

"Maureen, I came here to bring you dinner."

"You did. It was good."

"I didn't come to..."

"I know what you came for," I said. "I'm forty-six, and I just told the entire internet. Take your glasses off."

He took them out of his breast pocket, where they had been all evening, and folded them with great care.

Then he laughed, because I was already unbuttoning his shirt.

He caught my hands.

"Slowly," he said. "I've waited six weeks."

"I've waited twenty years for anyone to ask what I want."

"Then I'll make it worth it."

He kissed me against the refrigerator again, and this time there was no phone to stop us.

His mouth was hot and unhurried.

His hands slid under the hem of my scrub top and spread across my bare back, and I shivered all the way down.

"You're cold," he said.

"I'm not cold."

"No," he said, against my ear. "You aren't."

I pulled the top over my head and dropped it on the floor.

He looked at me, and I stood there in my plain gray bra with my belly soft and my arms bare.

I had stopped letting anyone see me under a light years ago.

"Don't," I said. "Don't look at me like that."

"Like what?"

"Like you're about to say something kind."

"I wasn't going to say something kind," Lowell said. "I was going to say that I've been trying to think about hospital policy for six weeks and it hasn't worked once."

I started to laugh, and it turned into a gasp when he put his mouth on my collarbone.

He kissed down to the edge of the bra.

His big hand cupped my breast, and his thumb moved across the nipple through the cotton.
