Chapter 6: Payroll Friday
On Friday at eight in the morning, the bank called Bev to say the firm's operating account was frozen.
The hold had been placed the afternoon before, on a letter from Curtis's lawyer.
Payroll for forty people was due at noon.
It came to $212,000.
Bev stood in my office doorway with the phone in her hand and her glasses pushed up into her hair.
"I can ask them to let the hold go for payroll," she said. "It'll take them two days."
"I've got it," I said.
"You've got what? The firm's money is the firm's money."
"My mother's life insurance is sitting in a savings account with my name on it and nobody else's," I said. "I've never touched it."
Bev put the phone down very slowly.
"Mo."
"It's the only thing in my life Curtis never knew about."
"Do I want to know how much?"
"Two hundred and forty thousand."
"Good," she said. "Then he doesn't get to make forty people wonder if their rent is paid."
I made the transfer from my desk.
It took four minutes, and when I clicked the last button I felt something go quiet in me that had been loud for a week.
At ten past ten, Curtis arrived.
He came up the stairs with a man in a charcoal suit carrying a leather folder, and he stopped in the middle of the floor.
The whole floor was there.
Bev had called every desk to the center of the room for a meeting, and forty people stood with their arms crossed, some holding coffee.
Curtis looked pleased.
"I'm sure you've all had a distressing morning," he said. "I want you to know I don't blame any of you."
Nobody said anything.
"The firm's accounts have been frozen by court order pending the dissolution," he said. "I imagine Mrs. Tolbert has told you your paychecks may be delayed. I wanted you to hear from me that I'll do everything I can to see you're taken care of."
