Chapter 9: Saturday
On Saturday at eleven o'clock Rafe parked his car at the end of Bridie's lane and walked up the path alone.
He had shaved.
He had brought a box of paints and a bag from the pharmacy that held a tube of the burn cream the nurse had recommended.
He stood on the step and held both out to me.
"Two hours," he said. "Your grandmother in the room. I'll be exactly where you say."
"Come in."
Tilly sat on the sofa with her rabbit, her bandage freshly changed.
Bridie sat on a hard chair by the window with her knitting, doing no knitting at all.
Rafe knelt on the rug and opened the box of paints.
"I got the ones with the sparkles," he said. "The shop lady said they're for little girls who like dragons."
"I like dragons," Tilly said.
"I know. I remember."
For a moment the room was almost all right.
Then a car door slammed outside, and a high voice cried, "Daddy Rafe!"
I knew before I looked.
The silver car stood behind his, and Posy was already out of it and running up the path in her red wellingtons, with a rucksack bouncing against her back.
Cressida stood at the gate with her phone in her hand.
"I'm so sorry!" she called. "She wouldn't stay in the car. She just wanted to say sorry to Tilly."
Posy hit the front door at full speed.
Rafe was on his feet before I had time to speak.
He caught her as she flew into the hallway, one arm under her, and she wrapped both arms round his neck.
"Daddy Rafe, I'm better, I'm all better, look!"
"Posy." His voice was unsteady. "Poppet, you shouldn't be here."
