Chapter 4: Bye, Fake

Scott laughed.

It wasn't a mean laugh. That was the worst part.

It was the laugh he used when Joey said he was going to be a dinosaur when he grew up.

"Okay," he said. "Get some sleep, Robin."

His mother didn't laugh.

She stood up and took her purse off the back of the chair, and she looked at me like she was pricing me.

"Let her say it, Scott. She's been wanting to say it for two years."

"Mom."

"Let her."

They left.

Joey waved the bear's paw at me from the doorway, and the diamond swung on its neck.

The nurse came around the curtain after they'd gone.

She didn't say anything. She just refilled my water, and put the call button closer to my hand, and fixed the blanket over my feet.

Then she said, "For what it's worth, hon, I'd have said it sooner."

He came back on Tuesday.

I'd just done my first short walk with the walker, with a physical therapist holding a belt around my waist.

I was sweating and shaking when I got back to the bed.

Scott was standing at the window.

His mother was in the chair again.

Joey was on the floor with a coloring book.

There was a manila envelope lying on my tray table, next to the green Jell-O.

"What's that?"

"What you asked for," Scott said.

The physical therapist was still unbuckling the belt from my waist.

She glanced at the envelope and went very quiet.

"I had the company lawyer draw it up yesterday," Scott said. "It's simple. You keep your car and your own savings account. The house is mine. Joey is mine. There's nothing to fight over."
