Chapter 36: Bed Six
Shen Yan did not reach for the lighter.
He pulled out the chair opposite and sat, with the grey blanket round his shoulders and one hand on his belly.
"I felt it go cold," he said. "I came to see what you'd do."
"Nothing yet."
"You could burn it."
"I picked it up to burn it." Xiao Chen turned the lighter over. "Then I pictured him reading my face when he heard."
"And opening it?"
"Then he gets what he wanted, which is me thinking about him. He's had enough of that."
Shen Yan nodded slowly.
"So it goes back in the drawer."
"It goes back in the drawer. Unread, unburned, and mine to decide."
"Ours."
"Ours," said Xiao Chen, and he put the lighter down.
They carried it back together and laid it under the cradle's runners.
Shen Yan tucked a folded baby blanket on top of it.
On Sunday they took the number 14 bus, and nobody grabbed anybody.
Xiao Chen watched every passenger who got on. Shen Yan pretended not to notice.
The nurse at the ward desk met them with a raised finger.
"Don't say anything. Go straight to bed six."
"Is he worse?" asked Shen Yan.
"He's awake," she said, "and he hates the pillow."
The old man in bed six was sitting up against the rail with his drip arm held out stiffly.
His face was grey and creased, with a white stubble, and his eyes were small, sharp and furious.
"Which one of you reads the paper?" he said.
His voice was a crack of gravel.
"I do," said Shen Yan, and his whole face lit. "You heard me?"
"Every Sunday. Four months of a boy telling me the price of fish." The old man frowned. "It's been wrong since the new year. Mackerel is not that cheap."
