Chapter 48: The Garden
Gu came to Cedar Hill on the last Saturday in May, and he brought a basket of loquats.
Four weeks had gone by since the captain told them to wait.
In every one of them Gu had been courteous, and every day it had made Xiao Chen's wolf pace a little harder.
Mr. Shen had set the tea table under the plane tree on the lawn.
He sat at the head of it with his stick across his knees.
Xiao Chen, thirty-two weeks, took the chair at his right hand, and Shen Yan, thirty-one, took the one beside him.
The old secretary stood behind the pot.
"The garden is beautiful this year," Gu said, easing his weight into a cane chair. "You must be glad to be home, Shen."
"I am."
"And the boys are so large already. It does an old man good."
He smiled at the belly of each of them in turn, slowly, kindly.
Xiao Chen watched the smile and felt the heat climb the back of his neck.
Under the table, Shen Yan's fingers slid beneath his cuff.
They found the inside of his wrist, where the skin was thin, and pressed down on the pulse and stroked it with the pad of one thumb.
Nobody had ever touched him there.
The wolf stopped pacing.
Something low in Xiao Chen's stomach tightened that was nothing to do with the sun, and he told himself firmly that it was nothing to do with the thumb either.
"I won't keep you," Gu said. "I came for two small things. The first is the key to your study."
"The files you want are at the Tower," Mr. Shen said. "Ask the secretary for copies."
"The ones I mean are not at the Tower."
