Chapter 53: Read Every Page

Gu's lawyer was a neat man in a good suit, and he had brought a leather folder and a gold pen.

He stood at the kitchen table in the Riverside Court flat and smiled at both of them.

"Only a few pages," he said. "Mr. Gu wants to spare you the trouble, with the babies so close."

Shen Yan sat at the table in his dressing gown with a pot of tea at his elbow.

Xiao Chen stood behind him with a hand on the chair.

"Leave it with us," Xiao Chen said.

"I'm afraid I'm asked to wait. The printer is booked for noon."

"Then you'll wait."

The lawyer's smile held.

He sat in the chair by the door, folded his hands and admired the lemon tree.

Xiao Chen slid the folder across the table, and Shen Yan took the first half of the pages.

They read.

They read in silence, as they had read the articles in the chambers.

Each passed a finished page to the other without a word.

It took forty minutes.

On page six Shen Yan stopped and put his finger on a line.

"Chen."

"I see it."

Page six said that the voting on every block would take place in the executive suite.

The suite was on the thirty-first floor of Harbour Tower.

It said the suite was reached by a private lift, and that the lift key was held by the deputy chairman.

It said a signatory who was not in the suite at ten o'clock would be treated as absent.

"He wants us at his door," Shen Yan said, very low. "In labour, if it comes to that, with him holding the key."

Xiao Chen turned to the front.

The cover page was a single line.

It read: Acknowledgement of receipt. One signature of either signatory.

"And that one's the trap."

He ran his finger down to page nine.

There, in small type, the amendment said that an acknowledgement signed by either signatory would be deemed adoption of all that followed.

Shen Yan breathed out through his teeth.
