Chapter 22: Standby

The man in the windbreaker walked out.

Twenty-two firefighters and EMTs stared at me.

"Can he do that?" said the skinny EMT in the back.

"Apparently." I turned the page.

The order listed its reasons.

The lobby in February. The diner with a "terminated employee." The video. A "credible concern of disruption" at a private event.

At the bottom was a judge's signature, and a hearing date in May.

Two weeks after the summit.

"Okay," I said. "Where were we. ESI level two."

Nobody was looking at the whiteboard.

"Ma'am," said a big firefighter in the front row. "Are we really just doing level two right now?"

"Yes," I said. "Because a man with a lawyer can stop me going to a party. He can't stop me teaching you to look at the patient."

They did level two.

At the end of class, all twenty-two of them signed the back of my copy of the order.

My lawyer read it that afternoon with her boots on her desk.

"It bars you from attending as a guest or a member of the public," she said. "And from contacting his staff."
