I opened the envelope on the courthouse steps, with Mabel reading over my elbow.
Nurse Manager, Emergency Department, Lakeshore General.
"What's a manager?" Mabel said.
"The boss of the nurses."
"Even Ronnie?"
"Nobody's the boss of Ronnie."
The interim president waited with her hands in her blazer pockets.
"I have conditions," I said.
"I'd be worried if you didn't."
"The TenScore queue never comes back. Not in my ER, not in any of the nine."
"It's already in a dumpster."
"Ronnie's warning comes out of her file. And she gets a promotion she'll complain about."
"Done."
"And the screen in the waiting room gets turned around."
She tilted her head.
"Turned around how?"
"So the people waiting can see it," I said. "Their place in line, and why. And a nurse decides. Every time."
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then she held out her hand again.
"Monday," she said. "Seven a.m. Bring your crew."
On Monday, May 18, I parked in the staff lot at 6:40.
