Chapter 5: Walked Out
I knew that. Everybody at Lakeshore knew that.
I'd just never heard it said in the same breath as my name.
"I want a meeting," I said. "In person."
"Wednesday at eight p.m.," the HR woman said. "With the hospital president. You may bring a union representative."
Ronnie was the union representative.
On Wednesday she ironed her good fleece vest.
The meeting was in a second-floor conference room with a bowl of wax apples.
The hospital president had silver hair and a lanyard he kept touching.
A woman from HR had a folder.
A man from TenScore's legal department sat at the end of the table in a very nice suit and didn't introduce himself.
"I didn't mention Lakeshore," I said. "I didn't show a patient. I didn't show a hallway. I held up my own phone in my best friend's living room."
"Your video has been stitched by over four hundred healthcare workers," the HR woman said, "several of whom reference our ER by name."
"Your husband's company is a partner of this health system," the president said, touching his lanyard. "We can't have staff publicly attacking our partners."
"He's not my husband. I filed Monday."
The TenScore lawyer wrote that down.
"The suspension stands," the president said. "Pending review."
"Then look at the screen downstairs," I said. "Look at the gold flags. Ask IT why a nurse can't move a feverish baby up the list."
The TenScore lawyer stopped writing.
The president stood.
"Security will walk you out."
The security guard at the door was a big gentle man who'd brought me coffee on nights for three years.
He looked at the floor.
"I'm sorry, Casey. They said the main route."
The main route went straight through the ER.
He held the door and I crutched through it.
