Chapter 6: Kitchen Table

I put Mabel's geode down.

"Tell me."

Jesse dried his hands on a dish towel and sat across from me.

"Saturday night. A woman, fifty-eight, chest pain. I handed her off at your desk at 11:10. The screen gave her a 4. She sat."

"The traveler on triage tried to move her up. The screen kept putting her back. She coded in a chair at 1:30." He folded the towel in half. "Monday, a guy in his seventies. Short of breath. A 3. Same thing."

My hands were cold around the bowl.

"Did you report it?"

"To my chief. He said the hospital's software isn't our department." He looked at me. "It's everybody's department when we're the ones who bring them in."

We started the next night.

Jesse brought a shoebox of his own copies. Run sheets, the paper backups his crew kept.

Ronnie brought her memory, which is better than paper.

We sat at Ronnie's kitchen table with the names blacked out in marker.

Age. Complaint. Time of handoff. TenScore number. Time seen.

"This one," Ronnie said, tapping a sheet. "Kid with a broken arm. Bone sticking out. Scored a 5. A guy with a sore throat went ahead of him."

"Did the sore throat have a gold flag?"

"Yeah. He did."

I wrote it down.

By Friday we had thirty-one cases in eight days.

Nineteen of them had a gold flag somewhere ahead of them in the line.

"I can't read this," I said, holding up one of Jesse's sheets.

"It's a five."

"It's a squid."

"It's clearly a five."

"Jesse, your patients deserve a man who can write numbers."

"My patients deserve a man who can start an IV in a moving truck on Kinnickinnic. They got one."

On Saturday a man from the fire academy called.

He'd seen the video. He'd also talked to Jesse.
