Chapter 7: No Deal
"Four hundred thousand," I said.
"And the house. Free and clear. I'll refinance it out of my name." Bryce tapped the folder on the glass. "You could stop working nights. You could stop working at all."
"I like working."
"You're suspended."
"Whose fault is that?"
He sighed.
"My lawyer will send it to your lawyer. We'll do it properly at mediation. Monday." He turned to go, then turned back. "Casey. This is a nine-level offer. Don't treat it like a four."
He went down the steps.
His car was idling at the curb with the heat on.
Somebody was sitting in the passenger seat with long chestnut hair.
Mediation was on the thirtieth floor of a downtown tower.
A glass conference room. A glass table. A view of the frozen lake all the way to the edge of the world.
My lawyer was a tired woman in sensible boots who'd been recommended by three nurses.
Bryce's lawyer had cufflinks shaped like little gavels.
The mediator sat at the end with a legal pad and the face of a man who'd seen every marriage in Milwaukee end.
Bryce had brought copies of an agenda for everyone.
It had numbered items.
Next to each item was a score.
1. Asset division (priority: 9).
2. Communications agreement (priority: 10).
3. Personal items (priority: 2).
"My grandmother's quilt is a two?" I said.
"It's already in your possession," Bryce said. "It's resolved. Resolved items score low."
My lawyer put her hand on my arm.
"Let's hear the offer."
Bryce's lawyer slid the folder across the glass.
"The marital home, unencumbered. Four hundred thousand dollars, paid in two installments. In exchange, Ms. Wardlow signs a standard confidentiality agreement and removes certain content from social media."
"Standard," I said.
"Completely standard."
"Then you won't mind if I read it out loud."
