Chapter 14: The Keys
Kurt's POV
Monday morning I walked Maisy to school with her rabbit under one arm and her hand in mine.
Emmeline walked on the other side of her.
We had a lawyer from the county legal clinic with us, a tired woman with a briefcase who had agreed to meet us at the gate for free.
The principal took us into her office and closed the door.
She slid a form across the desk.
It was the pickup list.
Three names were typed on it: Emmeline Gleason, Kurt Gleason, Lowell Bissell.
The signature at the bottom said *Emmeline Gleason*, in handwriting a lot like hers.
"I didn't sign that," Emmeline said.
"I believe you," the principal said. "But our policy says a signed form stands until the parent comes in person with photo ID."
Emmeline put her license on the desk.
The principal crossed out the third name and initialed it.
"Mr. Bissell has already come by once this morning," she said. "I told him the form was under review."
"What did he say?" the lawyer asked.
"He said he'd come back at three with a court order."
Emmeline looked at me.
"He doesn't have one," the lawyer said. "Not yet. Not for a child who lives with both parents."
"Then he'll stand at the fence for nothing," I said.
I knelt in front of Maisy at the classroom door.
"Bug. If a man comes and says I sent him, you say no."
"Even Mr. Lowell?" she said. "He gave me ice cream."
My jaw tightened.
"Especially Mr. Lowell," I said.
At two forty I was at the fence myself, before the buses.
Lowell never came.
He sent a woman from his store office with a clipboard, who stood at the curb for ten minutes watching the children and left when I walked toward her.
