Chapter 11: Two Choices
I asked Fred to put his phone in my sweater pocket, with the recorder running.
Then I texted Camille from my own number for the first time in eleven days.
Operations floor. Midnight. Come alone.
She answered in under a minute.
I'll be there.
Thirty-one floors up, the flight operations room was dark except for the red pins glowing on the California map.
Forty empty desks.
Forty screens asleep.
I stood in the center aisle in a black sweater and waited.
At midnight the elevator opened, and she came out with Duchess in her arms.
She had changed into a plain gray dress, and she wore no jewelry.
She looked tired, and for the first time since I had known her, she looked her age.
"Lena," she said. "You came to the right place."
"You read the review."
"I have read it a hundred times."
She set the dog down, and Duchess went and curled up at the foot of the nearest desk.
"Do you know what I did the night he died?" Camille asked. "I called nine-one-one from our kitchen. They told me a unit had been dispatched, and I should wait by the phone. So I waited. For an hour and a half I sat there and waited for someone to tell me what happened to my husband."
"I came back for him in six minutes."
"I know. I have the log."
"He was gone."
"The mountain moved, yes."
"I stood on that slope for an hour with my light on the mud."
"I know that too," Camille said. "It's in the review. It says you were pulled off the slope by your crew chief. It says you refused to leave."
