Chapter 24: Guardian One
"Yes," I said.
I did not wait for anyone to tell me it was all right.
Fred's truck was still in the lot, and the dented helmet was in the bag on its back seat.
I lifted it out with both bare hands.
The white letters on the back had worn at the edges, and a crack ran along one side where it had hit a rock on a bad night years ago.
I turned it over and looked at the word.
Then I put it on my head, and the strap clicked under my chin.
It fit exactly as it always had.
Guardian One sat on the roof pad of the Grosvenor tower with her rotors turning slowly, and the engine already warm.
Fred climbed into the back with the rescue bag and the hoist controls.
He had been a crew chief in the army before he was a chief pilot, and he moved around the cabin without a wasted motion.
Hayes stood at the side door with his hand on the frame.
"Where do you want me?"
"Right seat," I said. "Headset on."
"I'm not a pilot."
"You're the ops desk."
He stared at me.
"The line forwards to you," I said. "Every call that comes in for this aircraft, you take. You don't hand it to anyone, and you don't put anyone on hold. You tell me exactly what they say."
He climbed in and pulled the headset over his ears.
Nobody said another word.
I ran the checklist from memory, switch by switch, and my hands did not shake.
"Guardian One," I told the tower, "lifting for the Calabasas ridge."
We went up through the afternoon smoke with the whole city sliding away under the skids.
