Chapter 4: Mrs. Grosvenor Is Unwell
I slept three hours in a plastic chair at the burn clinic, with the urn in my lap and the bag between my feet.
At eight in the morning I took a cab to the Grosvenor tower in Century City.
The flight operations floor was on thirty-one.
It had glass walls, forty desks and a map of California on the far wall with a red pin for every Sentinel home.
Every head turned when I came out of the elevator.
Nobody had ever seen me up there without Hayes.
I walked down the center aisle with my bandaged hands held in front of me.
Camille's office was at the end, with her name on the glass and a dog bed under the desk.
She was on her feet before I reached the door.
She wore a cream suit this morning, and her light brown hair was pinned back neatly.
Duchess trotted out from under the desk and sniffed at my shoes.
"Lena," Camille said. "Oh, sweetheart."
She crossed the carpet with both arms open.
I took a step back, and she stopped with her hands in the air.
"I'm so sorry about your grandmother," she said. "I only heard last night. Hayes called me from the car, and I haven't stopped crying since."
Her eyes were red.
Her voice shook in the right places.
Behind me I heard forty people stop typing.
"I want the ops line audio from the night of the fourteenth," I said. "All thirty-eight calls. And the radio log for Guardian One."
"Of course you do."
"Today."
"Lena, honey." She lowered her voice until it was soft and private. "Those recordings are protected. There's an incident hold on them, and our counsel has to release them. It could take weeks."
