Chapter 5: The Rule He Signed

Hayes found me on the curb outside the pharmacy at ten past nine.

He had not shaved, and he was wearing yesterday's tuxedo trousers with a gray sweater over the shirt.

His phone was in his fist, open to the same article that was open on mine.

"Who took that picture?" he said.

"You tell me."

"Get in the car."

"Hayes."

"Please." His voice was rough. "I want you in the room when I ask her."

I got into the car because I wanted that too.

He took me up to the executive floor by the private elevator, and for the first time since I married him I walked into his office without being announced.

It was a corner room, white and glass, with a desk the size of a door.

He sat me in the chair facing it, and he stood beside the desk with one hand flat on its surface.

Then he pressed the intercom.

"Camille. My office. Now."

She was there in under two minutes, with Duchess tucked under one arm.

She took in the room in one look, and I saw her adjust.

"Hayes," she said softly, and she glanced at me. "Oh, good. You found her. I've been so worried that she'd hurt herself."

"Who sent the photo?"

"What photo?"

He turned his phone around and held it up.

The picture of me on the hospital bed filled the screen.

Camille's face did not change.

"Hayes, that was a mistake. A well-meaning intern in comms sent it over from the clinic's records. I never approved it going out. I'm going to find out who did."

"How did the clinic's records get to comms?"

"I requested a care summary. I wanted to be sure she was getting treated." She turned to me, and her eyes filled right on schedule. "Lena, I'm so sorry. I was only trying to help."
